Solid Waste Management: RGCMS – Swachch Bharat Abhiyan

This activity was conducted to promote awareness and help students understand the value of cleanliness & maintenance of hygiene around vicinity, in collaboration with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation at Ghansoli Railway Station, Ghansoli. Along with Navi Mumbai municipal corporation ; with 122 students willingly participated in this activity being performed on the palm beach. The NMMC representatives distributed broom, buckets to aid better cleanliness drive.

Provision for Wet and Dry Waste Segregation:

Waste generated from tree droppings is a major solid waste in the campus. The waste is segregated at source by providing separate dustbins for bio-degradable and non-bio-degradable waste. The total solid waste collected in the campus is 22 kg/day. Single sided used papers are reused for writing and printing in our institute. Important and confidential reports / papers are sent for recycling after completion of their preservation period to local old paper mart shop.

Landscaping: Green Campus Initiatives: Green Area

Every year, the college organizes a tree plantation program involving students, the director, and all
staff members to create a green cover, eco-friendly atmosphere, and provide pure oxygen on
campus. The campus hosts around 255 trees of approximately 20 different species, including
indigenous ornamental, medicinal, and wild plants. In addition to planting new trees regularly,
the college maintains a botanical garden, seasonal flower garden, and a rainwater harvesting
system as part of its biodiversity and ecological efforts. These activities not only enhance the
campus environment but also raise awareness about sustainability among students and the local
community. This includes the plants, greenery, and sustainability of the campus to ensure that
the buildings conform to green standards. This also helps in ensuring that the Environmental
Policy is enacted, enforced, and reviewed using various environmental awareness Programmes.

Tree Plantation

10th December 2022, a Tree Plantation Activity was organized in Asangoan to promote environmental
sustainability. The event was conducted by Dr. Dinesh Gabhane and Dr. Farheen Ahmad in
association with Rotary Club Satellite City, Navi Mumbai. A total of 15 college students
actively participated in planting trees, contributing to creating a greener and healthier
environment. The activity lasted for 5 hours and aimed to raise awareness about the importance
of tree conservation.

Soil Awarness

On 16th October 2022, a “Walk for Soil” Awareness event was organized at the RGCMS Campus to promote
the importance of soil conservation. The activity was led by Dr. Dinesh Gabhane, Dr. Radhika
Wadhera, and Prof. Farheen Ahmad. A total of 40 students and 3 staff members actively
participated in the event, which lasted for 5 hours. The initiative aimed to raise awareness
about protecting soil health and its crucial role in maintaining ecological balance.

Alternate sources of energy and energy conservations

This indicator addresses energy sources, energy consumption, energy monitoring, lighting, appliance,
natural gas, and vehicles. Energy use is clearly an important aspect of campus sustainability
and thus requires no explanation for its inclusion in the assessment.
Observations
Energy source which is utilized by everyone is electricity only. Equipments such as computers
are used with power saving mode. Also, campus administration runs switch–off drill on regular
basis. In the whole campus electricity was shut down after occupancy time as one of the
practices for energy conservation. For paperless environment and energy efficient usage of
G-Suite is implemented in the campus.
The institute also has Diesel Generator set of 125Kva as alternate source of energy for any
emergency use of electricity.
The institute has Biometric Machine for staff attendance which is also a part of paperless
record.

Facilities for alternative Energy Conservation implemented by the institute are as follows:

Management of Various Types of Degradable and
Non-Degradable Waste:

Degradable Waste

The Waste Generation indicator at our institute focuses on the production, disposal, and recycling of
various types of solid waste such as paper, food, plastic, glass, construction debris, and
garden waste. The campus manages canteen waste by converting it into manure for organic farming,
where okra vegetables are also grown. Tree droppings are a significant source of solid waste,
which is segregated at the source using separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable
waste. On average, the campus generates about 22 kg of solid waste per day. Used single-sided
papers are reused for printing, while confidential documents are sent for recycling. Metal and
wooden waste are collected and handed over to authorized scrap agents for proper processing.

E-Waste Generation

E-waste can be described as electronic products that are unwanted, not working, is near or at the end
of its useful life. This makes up about 5% of all municipal solid waste worldwide but is much
more hazardous than other waste because electronic products contain cadmium, lead, mercury, and
PolyChlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) that can damage human health and the environment.

The e-waste generally includes the tube lights, CFL, LED are stored into the scrap yard of college.
This waste material is yet to be disposed. E-waste generated in the campus is very less in
quantity. The college has total of 103 computers and 6 printers in working condition. The
e-waste and defective item from computer laboratory is being stored properly. The institution
has decided to contact approved E-waste management and disposal facility in order to dispose
e-waste in scientific manner.

E-waste management

On 30th September and 1st October 2019, the Student Body of RGCMS organized a Waste Management
activity at the college ground to promote proper waste segregation practices. The program was
conducted under the guidance of Dr. Radhika Wadhera and Prof. Farheen Ahmad and involved 43
student volunteers. Over a total of 8 hours across two days, students actively participated in
separating dry and wet waste, contributing to a cleaner and more eco-friendly campus
environment.

World Water Day Pledge

On 22nd March 2022, a “World Water Day Pledge” activity was organized at the college through the
online platform Google Meet. The event was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Radhika Wadhera
and Prof. Farheen Ahmad and lasted for 15 minutes. A total of 61 volunteers, including students
and teachers, participated in the event by collectively reading out the pledge, committing to
save water and promote its responsible use for a sustainable future.

Green Campus Initiatives

Green Area

This includes the plants, greenery, and sustainability of the campus to ensure that the buildings
conform to green standards. This also helps in ensuring that the Environmental Policy is
enacted, enforced, and reviewed using various environmental awareness programmes.

To create green cover, eco-friendly atmosphere and pure oxygen at the college campus, plantation
program is organized every year involving all students, director and all staff members. Campus
is located in the vicinity of approximately 20 types (species) of trees. There are about 255
trees available in the college campus. Various tree plantation programs are organized at the
college campus and surrounding villages through Student Body. This program helps in encouraging
eco-friendly environment which provides pure oxygen within the institute and awareness amongst
the residents. The plantation program includes plantation of various type of indigenous species
of ornamental and medicinal as well as wild plant species. Under the biodiversity and ecological
survey, rainwater harvesting plant is well maintained. The college also maintains botanical
garden in the campus.
